CAIR: Muslim Civil Rights Group Calls for Probe of Bias Motive for Shotgun Attack on Maine Halal Business Sign

IMG 20180409 WA0000(WASHINGTON, DC, 4/11/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities in Maine to investigate a possible bias motive for an apparent shotgun attack on the newly-installed sign for a Muslim business.

Owners of the Five Pillars Butchery House of Meat in Troy, Maine, say someone fired buckshot through the sign for their halal (Islamically-permissible) meat business on Sunday just over an hour after the sign was put up. (NOTE: It is assumed the shooter used a shotgun because there were multiple holes in the sign, but only one shot was heard.)

The incident has been reported to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office.

“Because of rising Islamophobia nationwide, and because of the increase in hate incidents targeting American Muslims and other minorities, we urge law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this shooting,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

Hooper noted that CAIR said it has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

Community members are being urged to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report

CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
