CAIR-Philadelphia Seeks Ethnic Intimidation Charge for Incident Targeting Muslim Woman

(PHILADELPHIA, PA, 11/7/17) - The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Philadelphia) today called on law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania to consider bringing an ethnic intimidation charge against a man who allegedly told a Muslim woman "all terrorists should be shot” and then made motions and sounds like an automatic weapon.

Point Township, Penn., police say the Muslim woman was targeted by the man as she waited outside a Northumberland County store on Saturday. The Muslim woman -- who took a cell photo of the man and his vehicle, and wrote down his license plate number -- told a local media outlet that she “was not sure if he had a gun.”

“Based on the alleged bias-motivated actions of the perpetrator, we urge local and state law enforcement authorities to consider bringing an ethnic intimidation charge in this case,” said CAIR-Philadelphia Executive Director Jacob Bender.

He noted that in Pennsylvania, “ethnic intimidation” is an offense outlined in Title 18, Section 2710 of the state’s criminal code.

CAIR said it has witnessed an unprecedented increase in hate incidents targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump.

The Washington-based civil rights and advocacy organization urges community members to report any bias incidents to police and to CAIR's Civil Rights Department at 202-742-6420 or by filing a report at: http://www.cair.com/report

CAIR recently launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
