CAIR Joins in Bipartisan Letter to Congress by 25 Groups Against Warrantless FISA Searches of Government Databases

CAIR logoCAIR today joined a bipartisan letter signed by 25 organizations and sent to leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives in support of an amendment that prohibits warrantless searches of government databases for information that pertains to U.S. citizens.

Sponsored by Reps.Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), the amendment to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2016 would prohibit warrantless searches of government databases for information collected under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that pertains to U.S. citizens.

Although Section 702 prohibits the government from intentionally targeting the communications of U.S. persons, it does not explicitly restrict deliberately querying communications of Americans that were “inadvertently” or “incidentally” collected under Section 702.
